I am so excited to be going to Germany! I have been counting down the days, only 16 days now. Since I started taking German as a subject in Grade 8 , going on exchange to Germany became my dream and now it’s all becoming a reality.

Ich bin jetzt schon 8 Wochen in Pretoria und bleibe leider nur noch 4 Wochen. Ich hab alles von Anfang an genossen, ich wurde unglaunlich gut aufgenommen von allen, verstehe mich super gut mit meiner Gastfamilie. In der Schule bin ich bei jeder Klasse willkommen und verbringe die Zeit dort mit Stufe 10 bis 12 und fühLe mich bei allen wohl.
Ich muss ehrlich sagen die ersten Wochen habe ich immer wieder dran gedacht wie krass es wär mit meinen Freunden und Familie wieder was zu machen oder zumindest meine Freunde hierherzuholen. Aber inzwischen bereue ich es nicht länger hier bleiben zu können. Ich mache Pläne 2023 mein Abschluss hier zumachen und nicht in Deutschland. Mit meiner Gastfamilie habe ich mich wie mit meiner eigenen eingelebt und gehe im Dezember mit denen nach Mozambique.
Es kann nichts schiefgehen, also an alle die bedenken haben, geht einfach.

Ich bin gerade bei der Hälfte meines 10-wöchigen Aufenthalts in SA angelangt. In diesen 5 Wochen habe ich jetzt schon unfassbar viel erlebt. Von Anfang an wurde ich mit offenen Armen empfangen und habe mich bei meiner Gastfamilie sofort wie zuhause gefühlt. Auch die Schule ist echt cool. Ich hab die Möglichkeit bekommen im Orchester mitzuspielen und das macht sehr viel Spaß! Ich weiß nicht, wie ich mich in 5 Wochen von allen hier verabschieden kann… Vielen Dank, Petra, dass ihr diese unvergessliche Zeit hier ermöglicht habt!

Hi Petra,
My name is Robyne P**** and in October 2002 - January 2003 I was placed with a family in Sachsen-Anhalt, Germany.
I remember meeting Lodie de Jager in Pretoria for the interview. He asked me how I would tell my host mom I wanted a soft boiled egg. And I remember thinking - I don’t like eggs. Why would I ask her for that?
Lodie had to somehow push me to a decent answer, but I’ll never forget how confused I was at the time and how silly my answers were.
I stayed with the Sch***** family in a small town of roughly 2500 people. Back then, Roßla wasn’t even in the map and I was convinced I was going to be dropped off in the middle of nowhere and left there.
But it all turned out OK.
I am now 35 years old and 20 years later still have contact to my host family. My host sister grew to be one of the best friends I’ve ever had, she I ended up moving to Germany to be close to her and my host family.
I thought of sending you this message, because as she left my apartment today, she said: “Funny how Dad just found an ad in the paper once for an exchange student and that changed our lives”.
I want to thank you for having this program. It honestly has changed my life.
I have attached a photo that we took today of my host sister, her fiancé and two children, and with me and my wife. I’ll see my host parents next week and can gladly send more photos then :)

Es ist sehr schwer 6 Monate zusammenfassen aber rückblickend kann ich sagen, das diese 6 Monate in Pretoria zu den schönsten meines Lebens gehören!
Es war eine unvergessliche Zeit die ich auch während Corona, bei meiner Gastfamilie die mir sehr an das Herzen gewachsen ist, genossen habe!
In eine Schule in Südafrika zu gehen ist unglaublich unterschiedlich und deswegen so wahnsinnig besonders. Es war eine super tolle Erfahrung, mit meinem Gastbruder und den Jungs von Boys High in die Schule zu gehen.
Ich freu mich jetzt schon darauf meine Gastfamilie wieder zu sehen !

Es ist gerade sehr ruhig geworden um eure Organisation. Aber wie sollte es auch anders sein in diesen schweren Zeiten, die wir durchstehen müssen. Und gerade deshalb wollen wir, als Familie, ein herzliches Dankeschön in euer Gästebuch schreiben.
Heute ist in Südafrika 🇿🇦 Happy-fathers-Day.
Marie, skypt immer noch oft mit ihrem "Bruder" Tilman in Pretoria. Heute denkt sie ganz besonders an ihre Familie dort. Und noch immer bekommt sie feuchte Augen, wenn sie sich an diese schöne Zeit erinnert. Heute gingen ganz besonders viele Grüße nach Pretoria. Sie hatte, dank euch, eine wundervolle Zeit in einer besonderen Familie.
Aber auch wir haben eine besondere Beziehung nach Johannesburg. Vor fünfzehn kam, über eure Organisation, Jaco zu uns. Wir haben das Privileg, das wir bis heute eine innige Freundschaft pflegen. Eigentlich sind wir eine große Familie geworden. Wir waren zu seiner Hochzeit, gemeinsam im Urlaub, verbringen Zeit mit seiner Familie, wenn es uns möglich ist. Wir sind so dankbar, dass wir uns für einen Schüleraustausch entschieden haben. Heute gingen liebe Grüße an ihn. Zum ersten Mal gratulieren wir ihm zum Vatertag. Wir sind so stolz auf ihn. Er hat eine wundervolle Frau und eine herzallerliebste kleine Tochter.
Und wir sind mit dabei.
Das macht uns sehr glücklich.
Deshalb nochmal ein herzliches Dankeschön an euch alle.
Wir hoffen, dass wir alle gut durch diese stürmische Pandemie kommen und gesund bleiben.

What an amazing journey this has been! Besides all the beautiful places I've seen and the amazing people I've met, I think I've grown a lot these past few weeks. The time I spent here was really amazing. I learned so many new things and made the best memories with the Bartel family. Every minute I spent with them I enjoyed. I am so happy that I stepped out of my comfort zone and got to experience the german culture.

It's been new experiences from the get-go, and I've constantly been busy with activities with my family.
I get along really well with my family, and I'm very pleased that I was placed with them. I love the culture, the food, the people, the activities, the language, everything.
I wish I am able to stay longer, and especially to be able to go to school here, so I am certain that I have no choice but to visit again some day. The experience has only further convinced me that I want to move to Germany.
I'm really thankful for the opportunity that has been given to me, and I'm very content to be able to celebrate Christmas and my birthday here with them, as well as end the 2010's on such a high note.
I am pleased with my Host Family
I am experiencing new things on a daily basis that are both positive and negative. The Bratwurst is especially a winner and all the other fresh food.
I am just finding it hard to get used to the language the family uses l, because i am a Christian and they are not so our values and manners differ alot.

All is Well with exchange and i have enjoyed the past few weeks of experience very much . i’m coping well away from home .
